About the Bahamas

WELCOME TO THE BAHAMAS!

The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is a enchanted chain of 700 tropical islands and cays. Sixteen of these islands are inhabited and Nassau on the island of New Providence is the capital city. Despite being one of the smaller islands, New Providence constitutes about eighty percent of the entire population of the country. It is one of the ship registration capitals of the world. Other major islands include Abaco, Eleuthera, Exuma, Grand Bahama, Inagua and Long Island. Acklins, Andros, Berry Islands, Bimini, Cat Island, Crooked Island, Harbour Island, Mayaguana, Ragged Island, Rum Cay, San Salvador and Spanish Wells are amongst the smaller islands and cays and are least inhabited but unique in charm and beauty. Mount Alvernia, the highest point in The Bahamas, is 206-feet above sea-level is located on Cat Island. There are many features to the Bahamas that make it special: the islands are recognized worldwide as a unique tourist and second home destination; it is home to the world’s third largest barrier reef and the diversity and incredible culture of its people is second to nowhere else in the world. Our white and pink soft sandy beaches and turquoise waters were spotted by astronauts on the moon and categorized as one of the wonders of the world. We also boast of being a center for offshore financial services, which is our second major industry.

Resting in between the south-west Atlantic Ocean, extending just 760 miles from the coast of Florida on the north-west and almost to Haiti on the south-east, The Bahamas is unmatched for heart-pounding adventure across 100,000 square miles of the world’s clearest waters and year-round delightful temperatures/climate.

CURRENCY:

The currency is extremely solid in the Caribbean with the Bahamian dollar on par with the US dollar.

Accessible by air and sea with numerous international airline carriers that fly from various regions; Europe, The Americas (North and South), Canada and the Caribbean. Air and sea Charters, yachts and cruise liners are all part of making The Bahamas easy access.

GOVERNMENT:

An independent nation as of July 10, 1973, with a Parliamentary Democracy, we are a member of the British Commonwealth with a British Sovereign Head of State. The Bahamas has a long tradition of democracy and stable governance. VAT (Value Added Tax) was introduced in January 1st, 2015 and is now being administered at a rate of 10%.
